What is the first step to becoming saved? I never thought about that question growing up. As a child, I was just told believe in Jesus, and you will be saved. Now that I am an adult, I realize there is more to being saved then to just believing that Jesus existed. People of other religions believe in Jesus. They believe that he was a real person and walked on this earth. Where we differ in our beliefs is the reason why Jesus was here on earth.
As I have dug into the scripture more and more over the past few years, I realize that just believing in Jesus is not enough. To be saved, you must believe in two things. That you are a sinner and that someone can save you from your sins. The first step to fixing any problem is to identify what is wrong. The second step is to seek a solution. In the case of salvation, all we have to do is the first step. God gave us the solution in the second step by sending his son to earth to die on the cross.
John 14:6 NASB Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
The first step of an eternity in heaven.
The first step that we need to take to fix the problem of sin is to pray. Unless we pray to God and ask for his forgiveness of our sins through Jesus, then we will not be saved. Prayer takes the act of believing to the next level. When someone is fully committed to following Christ, they will find solace in prayer. If you do not find yourself in prayer, it is impossible to have a relationship with Jesus. Without a relationship with Jesus, there is no way to be saved from your sin.
Everyone's relationship with Jesus is at a different place. There is no right place that you have to be. All that matters is that you have put your faith in Jesus to save you from your sins. Do not wander through life thinking that because you know who Jesus is that you are right with God. Only through a relationship can you be saved. Prayer is the first step to start your journey.
