Are we Watching Movies that Honor God?

watching movies

Most of us love watching movies.  Watching movies gives us a chance to relax and unwind from the world.  But what kind of movies are we filling our minds with?  I guess when I was younger, I watched just about anything that seemed interesting to me.  As I have grown older, I have become more selective on what I watch.

Our family likes to watch movies.  With a negative down turn in our culture, it is getting harder and harder to filter movies.  Take for example the latest Beauty and the Beast movie.  The movie was black listed by many Christian groups because of the gay scenes added it.  These scenes were subtle, but never less still included in the movie.  These scenes did not increase the value of the classic child's film but ended up turning off part of the audience.

Offensive language, sexuality and demeaning behavior plague a lot of movies that hit our big screens.  For some reason, it seems as though directors use these things to play to their audience.  A lot of what you see in movies is a reflection of the decay of our society.  Back in the day when these types of things were unacceptable, most mainstream movies avoided including them in their films.  Now our society teaches you that it is OK to be profane, sleeping around is the norm and being a jerk is just what we do.

Watching movies that are family friendly.

My family has subscribed to Pureflix for about six months now.  For those of you that are unfamiliar with Pure Flix, it is the Christian version of Netflix and Amazon Prime.  David A.R. White who is best known for his series God's Not Dead is one of the co-founders of Pureflix.

What I like about Pureflix is that the movies are family friendly.  Movies that have violence are not gory and graphic.  Love scenes consist of a kiss and nothing more.  It is nice to watch a film that you don't have to be embarrassed to see with your children.  The subliminal messages are not hidden in the movies.  They are just clean, wholesome and pure.

Philippians 4:8 NASB Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Garbage in garbage out.

One thing that I learned while studying fitness as a young man is garbage in and garbage out.  When you consume things that are not good for your body, your body rejects them, and you do not yield results.  Same thing goes for the movies that we watch.  When we fill our minds with garbage, we let this material soak our soul.

It is hard to be a Christian on Sunday and fill your head with garbage the rest of the week.  When you are trying to further, your spiritual life remembers garbage in and garbage out.  My rule of thumb for my family is if you wouldn't do it sitting next to Jesus then don't do it.  This has been a great example for us to follow.
