Seeing Life in Black and White

Jesus through the Storm

I have always seen life in black and white.  Right or wrong, one way or the other.  Last year a friend of mine told me about the gray middle in life.  I have never really thought about the gray middle.  In fact, I have never found myself in it.  My life has always been a two lane road where you are either going one direction or the other.

As Christians, it is important for us to have compassion for people living in the middle.  I am sure that I have missed a lot of opportunities and friendships in life because I focused on life in black and white. Being in the gray zone can be quite a struggle for someone.  Bombarding yourself with multiple decisions and scenarios can be tormenting depending on the struggle.  Living life in black and white, we often do not think out of the box for solutions.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB “Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”

Understanding life in black and white.

Instead of trying to think about life in black and white, we should think of life in God's eyes.  We need to trust the Lord with our struggles.  Our struggles should be laid out to him in prayer.  The Bible tells us multiple times that we need to depend on God for our struggles and decisions.  We need to rely on God in every aspect of our life.

I still process struggles of life in black and white, but I now stop to understand the gray middle.  Understanding the gray middle can help the wind and turn our two lane road into a sensible path.  I know that I need to take situations below the top layer.  What seems so simple on the surface can be very complex on the inside.  Peeling the layers of the onion away allows us to be a better friend, spouse, parent and Christian.
