Are you powerless to control actions causing wrong doing?

Powerless to Control

Are you powerless to control your greed and desire to do wrong? Are you in an unmanageable and out of control place? Do you know what you need, or are grabbing everything you can get in your hands?

Powerless to control what we take

Someone on YouTube did an experiment in New York City taping dollar bills on his suit. He held a sign saying take as many as you want. He even encouraged people to start grabbing money off his suit. Women with designer handbags came up and started grabbing the money as fast as they could.

Then, a homeless guy came up, and he took two dollars, saying he just wanted to get something to eat, and he would leave the remaining money for other people who needed it more.

The guy with dollar bills hanging all over his suit then took out his wallet and gave the homeless man another sixty dollars saying use that money to eat tomorrow, and the next day. Feed your dog. The homeless man graciously thanked him.

The people with the designer handbags might even consider themselves Christians. Maybe they believe that Jesus died on the Cross for us. They might go to church on Sunday, and even say the occasional prayer.

However, what if the wealthy taking the money had the Holy Spirit actively working inside of them? Would they take the money?

I believe if they needed it they would take only what they need like the homeless man.

The unfortunate part of this story is we only see the homeless man who needs the money and the greedy people in this story. We do not see the person who walked by not taking anything. We do not see the person who has the Holy Spirit working inside of them because they do not stand out. Instead, they reach out to people they see in need, rather than taking from those who have just because they offer.

“Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor.” (Matthew 5:3)

Powerless to control no matter what you have

I know what all of the people in the video are thinking, feeling and doing. The last experience I have is having the Holy Spirit working inside of me. Moreover, of all the roles, having the Holy Spirit working inside of you is by far my favorite.

I know what it is like to have nothing, needing money so that I can eat at the end of the night. And, I know what it is like to own a Ferrari, limos, and have designer clothes, while wanting more. All the while reinforcing myself as a Christian, believe in God, and “a good person.” Thankfully, I found out how to have the Holy Spirit working inside of me.

That is not to say that the Holy Spirit is always working, sometimes I try and take control. Sometimes is more often than I care to experience. There are those of us put in the videos situation that will do some not so flattering things.

How do we overcome our tendency to want to take more than we need? How do we get the Holy Spirit working inside of us? Those are questions come clear as you develop a personal relationship with Jesus.

Keep in mind; I mentioned a personal relationship with Jesus. Some people believe that is a private relationship with Jesus. The Holy Spirit working inside of you will not let you have a private relationship, rather you become very visible, even though it is a personal relationship.

The Holy Spirit is God working inside of us, not good that dwells inside of us because “good” is inherited from the Holy Spirit, not us as humans, but sins do reside inside of us.

Powerless to control our tendency to do wrong

How can we bring this story into our daily walk? Are you powerless in your tendency to do wrong when you know what is right? Do you deny your reality, and is your life unmanageable?

Are you willing to admit what haunts you, holds you back? Will you confront unhealthy routines that create anxiety, and wear you out? Are you ready to let the Holy Spirit work inside of you?

Is your pride a dominating force in your life? Pride isolates us from healthy relationships. It holds us back and digs us in even further.

Keep in mind; I had pride in fixing my failures myself, without accepting help from others. That only made my life that much worse. In fact, there are some things I have yet to let go of, but hopefully, by the time you read this, I will have let go of them.

Powerless to control our personal pride

“Pride ends in a fall, while humility brings honor.” (Proverbs 29:23)

Fortunately, I rarely say, “only if,” but many people do use those words. I know that the past is behind us, and in particular ways. Hopefully we learn from our past experiences, and yet at the same time, we repeat behaviors that are not healthy.

We need to take the next step, embrace every moment, getting the most out of our precious life. We need to live in today, not yesterday.

“Whatever is covered up will be uncovered, and every secret will be made known. So then, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in broad daylight.” (Luke 12:2-3)
