Being a Modern Christian in a Broken World

modern Christian

Do you consider yourself a modern Christian?  The generation of millennials has brought new meaning to the term modern Christian.  Christianity in itself hasn't changed since Jesus died on the cross.  In fact, the Bible hasn't changed either since the book of Revelation.  Only man has altered the Bible through translation.  I think that it is significant to point out that Christianity is changing, not because the word of God is morphing.  The modern Christian is willing to bend, stretch and ignore many vital parts of the Bible.

Just think of the term cherry picker for a minute.  When I was a kid, my grandmother had several cherry trees.  My brother and I would harvest the cherries and go door to door selling freshly picked cherries.  The first few days we were able to collect the low lying fruit.  As our week progressed, it was more challenging to get the best cherries harvested.  Many of the beautiful cherries were in hard to reach areas or at the top of the tree.  If we wanted to get a full bucket of cherries to sell, we had to do the work to get the most out of the tree.

Just like the cherry tree, our spiritual walk takes work. Like the low lying fruit on the tree, some Christians look for Biblical truths that do not challenge them.  One of the most significant factors that change our life is Biblical knowledge.  When we move past the low lying fruit and challenge ourselves, some of the best fruit is available if we just search for it.  There is more to the Bible than the Ten Commandments.  The Bible is filled with many parables that are still relevant in our lives today.  The modern Christian may never search out these stories but focus on their interpretation of what is right.

Why being a modern Christian is terrible.

If you want to see why being a modern Christian is bad, look no further than the family structure.  Divorce is at an all-time high.  Families have broken apart because of pettiness.  Divorce happens all too often when a marriage is not following God's plan.  The modern Christian needs to read their Bible to understand how marriage is supposed to work.

We have lost focus on the family unit so much that the modern Christian is now accepting of homosexual marriage.  Anything outside of one man and one woman forming a union before God will fail.
God designed the family to have a father as the head of the household.  Some children unfortunately never get to experience what a father looks like.  Single mothers are forced to take on roles that they were not designed to fulfill.  Likewise, single fathers are stuck in a position outside of God's plan as well.

As Christians, we cannot accept that this is the new norm.  We cannot fall prey to Satan's destruction of the family unit.  Bad things happen when we do not follow God's plan.  Families are broken, and children may never experience a Christian home as God designed.

Believing false truths is not what God wants.

You name it, every part of God's word is under attack.  Society is not only destroying the family as designed by God, but they are minimizing his creations as well.  You hear about every topic from climate change to be yourself.  We are fed lies that man can control the heavens and the earth.  Somehow the fallacy that man can turn up earth's temperature is being accepted by the modern Christian.  Love thy neighbor such as yourself is being changed to do what makes you happy.  Instead of humans caring for each other, life is about me and what is best for my agenda.

It is time for the modern Christian to start reading their Bible.  Instead of social media being your life coach, it is time to let God's word overflow in your life.  When all of the low lying fruit is gone, you have to make a choice.  Do you go without the fruit of the spirit, or do you dig deeper to find the best fruit hidden in the Bible?

How Christians are bear fruit.

John 15:1-6 NASB “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vine dresser.

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
