How are we Listening to Christian Music?

Listening to Christian Music

Listening to Christian Music can be an uplifting experience when you are fighting struggles in your life.  Do we just listen to Christian music because we think it is the right thing to do or do we take away something from the message?  Have you ever actually listened to the words of your favorite song and thought about what they meant?  Most Christian songs are written to highlight a story or verse in the Bible.

Only by reading our Bible, can we understand what the words mean when listening to Christian music?  The Bible and Christian music go hand in hand.  I have caught myself before, listening to the radio carefully and understanding a lyric.  Before I started reading the Bible on a regular basis, I would have never know what the lyric meant.  It is cool to make the connection as a listener between the Bible and the artist of the music that you are listening to.

TobyMac's song Speak Life is a great example of connecting with the Bible.

Here is a few lyrics from the song.

So speak life, speak life
To the deadest darkest night
Speak life, speak life
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why
Look into the eyes of the broken hearted
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope
You speak love, you speak
You speak life, oh oh oh oh oh
You speak life, oh oh oh oh oh

What does the Bible say about speaking life?

Proverbs 12:18 NASB “There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Psalm 19:14 NASB “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.”

Proverbs 15:4 NASB A soothing tongue is a tree of life, But perversion in it crushes the spirit.”

I challenge you next time you are listening to the radio jamming away to your favorite song.  Listen carefully, hear the words that are being spoken and search for their meaning in the Bible.  Listening to Christian music is meant to be positive and uplifting for the most part.  Make an intentional step to understanding the song so that you can use this music to help others.  Music is more than a song; it is meaningful words.  The words only become valuable to us when we understand them.
