What does the Bible say About Work Ethic?

Work Ethic

It seems as though the work ethic in our culture is declining as quickly as morals.  Every where you look, employers, are struggling to fill positions with quality workers.  Is there a correlation between morals and work ethic?  I wanted to know, so I dug into scripture to search for some answers.  As an employer, I battle with finding qualified and responsible employees to deliver a quality product for my customers.  I still remember the good ole days where people showed up to work, and they worked hard.

Colossians 3:23 NASB  Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,

Have you ever thought about work as described in Colossians 3:23?  When we work for the Lord, our mindset begins to change.  Instead of dwelling on things we don't like, we turn our focus over to pleasing God.  Doing things for the Lord will bring joy to our life.  I see a vast majority of people lacking a work ethic missing the joy in their life.  These people tend to lonely, down in the dumps and down on their luck.  What I witness first hand is a lot of self-created problems from these individuals.

When you are constantly in a depressed state, it makes it nearly impossible to overcome a lack of work ethic.

Finding peace with God changes your perspective on life.  Instead of blaming others for everything that is going wrong in your life, you praise God for what is going right.  Changing your attitude from a negative one to a positive one changes your work ethic.

Proverbs 10:4 NASB Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

There is no doubt about it when you are lazy, more than likely you will end up being poor.  Not everyone is poor because they are lazy, many circumstances dictate poverty.  What I see most every day in my business is laziness leads to poverty.  The employees that work hard have a better attitude.  They bring home more money and are better with their finances.  The lazy workers show up for work late, leave early or quit because they lack the motivation to work.

Attitude dictates work ethic.

I have never seen a hard worker with a negative attitude.  I have been in business nearly two decades and have employed hundreds of people.  When the negative attitude gets in the way, the work ethic is nowhere to be found.  Being wrapped up in negativity, denial sets in.  Instead of changing course, these employees hunker down and make things worse.  They end up being their own worst enemy.

Proverbs 13:4 NASB The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat.

People with negative attitudes job hop.  They keep moving from one employer to the next searching for something that they cannot find.  These people never last long at a job because they cannot get over themselves.  If these people had Christ in their lives, everything would change.  You can share the gift of salvation with someone, but they still may not choose to accept it.  Until these people want a Christ-like life, they will never have a good work ethic.
