Is it Stretching the Truth or Lying?

stretching the truth

Remember when you were a kid and you were stretching the truth? When you got caught stretching the truth your mother told you it was a lie? I am sure you have found yourself there a time or two and know full well what I am talking about. I find it incredibly dishonest when Christians stretch the truth without calling it a lie. If we are always reading the word of God, we should know better right?

I have found myself in a few situations over the past several months where I had caught fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in their lies. The funny thing is that sometimes these people believe their lies. I guess if you tell yourself the same thing over and over again and deny the truth, then you will begin to believe it.

Proverbs 6:16-19 NASB There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

Stretching the Truth with lies.

My question for brothers and sisters who purposefully lie, how does your intent further the kingdom of God? After all, we are servants of God and called to spread the truth. Pride is the biggest contributing factor that I see in the perpetual encompassing of lies. I have written on pride many times before in the past. If you haven't read my other blogs on this topic, I urge you to do so. I believe that pride is one of the single most damaging things to a Christian life. Often pride goes unnoticed by the offender. Pride also goes unchecked most of the time by fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

How can we possibly be living a life for Christ, when we let pride dictate and control our thoughts and actions? I struggled with pride for many years, so it is pretty easy to spot in others. I am not looking to judge others intents, but what I am focused on doing is calling out actions counter to what the Bible teaches us. God did not create us to stand idly by as others spew lies at the expense of the word of God.

Psalm 101:7 NASBHe who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;  He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.”

There is no need to lie.

Lies create deceit. Deceit leads us to sin or is a sin itself. Sin separates us from God. If we seek to become faithful followers of Christ, then we must let go of the lies. Let us be hot or cold about this issue, not lukewarm. Our creative words don't fool God. He knows our heart and mind. There is no way to pull a fast one on God. All we end up doing is pulling the covers over our head.

If you are hellbent on lying, then you should refer to your Bible for some guidance. Reciting meaningless prayers to draw an audience does not work either. When you come to the point in your life where things quit going your way, take an honest look at your spiritual walk. If you look down only to find your feet sinking into the ground, it is time to start moving again.
