Making Excuses Gets You Nowhere.

making excuses

We are all good at making excuses.  No matter what happens, it is sometimes hard to accept responsibility for our actions.  Excuses try to justify our actions when we are wrong in what we have done.  Young to old and everyone in between gets caught up in making excuses.

It is funny to ask your children, why they make a mess in their room or your house for that matter.  Instead of telling you sorry and getting right to work cleaning up, they start in with excuses.  I did this because of x,y,z.  It wasn't my fault because of x,y, z.  So and so made the mess it wasn't me.  No matter what the excuse is, the bottom line is there is a problem that needs to be addressed.  Blaming your actions on someone or something else doesn't fix what is wrong.

What does the Bible tell us about excuses?

Luke 14:16-20 NASB 16 But He said to him, “A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many; 17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.’ 19 Another one said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.’ 20 Another one said, ‘I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’

In this set of verses, we see that everyone has a different excuse for the same situation.  Instead of being honest and speaking the truth, excuses are made to justify their actions.

Making excuses is a scape goat.

Making excuses does not make you right.  Just because you believe that you have a justifiable reason for not doing something does mean that your logic is correct.  Telling yourself over and over again that others cause your problems does not make them go away.  Even if situations in your life are caused by others, making excuses for your behavior doesn't fix your problems.

It is time to quit feeling sorry for yourself and to quit making excuses.  Only you are in control of your actions.  No matter what others or life throw at you, you decide how to receive it.  Ever heard of turning lemons into lemon-aid?  When you make excuses, all you end up doing is sucking on the lemon
