It seems as though we live in a culture where a growing majority of people are feeling sorry for themselves.  You don't have to look any further than your TV.  There always seems to be an excuse for why someone cannot succeed in life.  People blame failure on their family, economic status, personal history, or everyone in general.  Honestly, it gets old hearing sob stories of how everyone in your life has kept you from succeeding.  In reality, you are to blame for your actions.

As an employer, the excuses from employees never end.  I don't have a car; therefore I cannot be a responsible adult and find a way to work.  My phone got shut off because I did not pay my bill and I don't know anyone else with a phone so that I can call into work sick.  It's not my fault that I don't have a driver's license.  I don't have enough money to put gas in my car because times are tough, as the cigarette is in one hand and the energy drink is in the other.

No, I am not trying to shame people, I am just tired of hearing the excuses.  Feeling sorry for yourself and making excuses does nothing to change your life for the better.  If you find yourself wallowing in your pity, knock it off.  People are tired of hearing about it.

Self-pity leads to feeling sorry for yourself.

Romans 12:3 NASB For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

When you are feeling sorry for yourself, you are putting yourself above God.  Instead of being humble, you elevate your importance.  When you dwell on your problems, you make them your God.  Look no further than Matthew 6:21 NASB.  Treasures are what we value and keep close to us.  Treasures don't have to be money or things, they can be our feelings and emotions as well.

Matthew 6:21 NASB  for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

How to fix self pity.

Here is a pretty easy answer.  Quit feeling sorry for yourself.  Instead of dwelling on your problems, ask God to work in your life.  When you focus on pleasing God, a lot of your problems will naturally go away.  Being distant from God leads to worldly distractions.  Remember, when you meet your maker some day, no amount of self-pity will save you from the rivers of fire in hell.

When God asks you why you should be allowed into heaven are you going to say because everyone was mean to me?  Are you going to make excuses to justify your behavior here on earth?  Unless you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, nothing that you say or feel will matter to God.

Seek God in every situation.  Seek his solution for your problems.  If you are not praying and looking to his word for solutions, you will find yourself wondering in the desert.  Don't be a fool and end up consumed by self-pity.  Find peace with your creator and lean on his wisdom for your life.
