Falling Out of Love in Christ

Falling out of love

Love for our Savior is what binds us to him.  Jesus died on the cross because he cared enough about us to save us from our sins.  We worship God because we are grateful for our creation.  We honor Jesus because he gave his life on the cross for us.  How do we fall out of love in Christ?

I have seen this many times before.  You see a Christian that is high on the word of God.  They go to Church and get involved in a lot of Church activities.  They surround themselves with Christians and have lots of Christian friends.  You view this person as a solid Christian until one day everything changes.

This person starts to change.  They may quit going to Church.  They may pull away from their Christian friends.  Their attitude starts to change.  The once “on fire” Christian has now turned into a charred piece of spiritual ember.  You do not recognize them anymore.  Friendships and families are broken over their attitude change.

What went wrong for someone to fall out of love with Christ?

My first thought is that this person never really new Christ.  They may have set their hopes and dreams on people or a church.  This person may have masked their real character by hiding under the veil of Christ.  Instead of having a relationship with Christ, they had a religion about Christ.

One of the hardest things to understand is that you cannot bring someone back to Christ that was never there.  It is almost harder to help someone that claims to know Christ then it is to help a non-believer.  With a non-believer, you are almost starting fresh.  You are introducing them to the word of God.  They become intrigued and start investigating who Jesus is.  With a “Christian” that has fallen out of love with Christ, you have an uphill battle on your hands.

Being a Christian states that you are a Christ follower.  Only knowing who Jesus is, does not make you a Christian.  Being a Christian is about the relationship that you have with Jesus.

We may never know the person's heart that fell out of love with Christ.  It is not our place to know or judge.  We can pray for this person and hope that Jesus works in their life to rectify whatever caused the separation from him.

What should you do if you find yourself separated from God?

It is important that we bring everything before God.  Since God already knows what is going on in our life and our heart, there is no point in trying to hide from him.  If you are angry or disappointed with him, tell him.  If you feel let down, express your emotions in your prayers.  The more we bring to God, the closer we will be with him.  God wants us to talk to him about everything.  There is no such thing as a pointless prayer.

I will leave you with this.  Matthew 10:29-31 “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.”
