Being Bullied in Life For Who You Are

Being Bullied

Being bullied is not a fun place to be in life.  It puts you in a dark place.  It makes you want to hide, and it makes you want to run away.  Bullying unleashes many emotions that we don't know to handle.  Having been being bullied during my childhood, I understand first had the emotional toll it does to you as a child.

During my school years, I was constantly being picked on because of my weight.  Being a quiet kid, I minded my own business.  I wasn't in sports or band.  My goal was just to get out as fast as I could.  Being bullied made my experience at school a horrible one.  Since I hated to go to school, I did everything I could to not be there.  It was not fun having to go to the counselor's office to share my feelings on being bullied.  Why should the victim of bullying have to be the one sitting on the couch?  We need to hit the issue of bullying head on and address the real problem.

Not only is there child bullying, but there is also adult bullying as well.  It seems like our culture is at the point where it is the cool thing to do to tear people down.  You see it on TV, you see it in magazines, and you can hear it when you are walking around in a store.  It is prominent in our daily lives.

How as Christians do we set ourselves apart in an evil world?  We are called to be the salt and the light of the world.

Matthew 5:13-16 NASB “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

How can we stop people from being bullied in life?

Since we are the salt and the light of the world, where does this fit in with being bullied?  First, we need to look at our lives.  Are we the aggressor when other people are being bullied?  We should be setting the bar as Christians.  It doesn't bring anyone closer to Christ when we pick them apart for the way they look, act or the lifestyle choices we make.  We are called to be better than that.  How is our light shining if we are covering it up by the darkness of the world?

If you don't want people to be bullied, step in and show the light.  Christians today focus more on pointing out the flaws in others than showing the light of the world.  We may attack others with malice and not even know it.  We don't step in when other Christians are targeting people.  We sit idly blind to the fact that our silence is contributing to bullying.

We can't stop everyone from being bullied, and we cannot stop every bully.  We need to do our part stop this behavior.  If your words are not encouraging, they can act as a dagger.  Encouraging words do not lead to bullying, but negativity can.
